Genius Renews Premier League Data Rights Agreement

The company managing the data rights for the English Premier League, Football DataCo, has extended its exclusive collaboration with Genius Sports, a sports data and technology provider.

According to the new agreement, Genius will continue formally cooperating with the data rights organisation through 2025. Additionally, it broadens the agreement to include other topics, such as Genius' data tracking programme.

Football DataCo and Genius' 2019 agreement

The prior collaboration, which was first created in 2019, gave Genius the exclusive right to gather, licence, and provide its sportsbook customers with official live betting data from the EPL. The agreement also covers the English Football League (EFL) and Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL).

The new agreement, which will end at the end of the 2024–25 season, will allow the company to share data from more than 4,000 UK football matches each season.

Genius Sports expanded its association with the EPL as the official monitoring data and analytics partner to encompass the EFL Championship and Championship Play-Off games using its AI-powered Second Spectrum solution.

All remaining Championship venues will therefore be equipped with Genius tracking devices.

"Most watched league in sports."

"The Premier League is the most popular league in world sport, and Genius Sports has created the fastest, most accurate and secure feed on UK football to first-class power products for sportsbooks worldwide," Genius CEO Mark Locke said.

"We are delighted to extend our partnership to continue to power innovation and now to expand it to include our suite of AI-powered Second Spectrum Tracking Data technology for the EFL Championship as well as the Premier League."

Adrian Ford, the general manager of Football DataCo, praised Genius and Second Spectrum for giving its stakeholders "first-class data" and creative solutions.

Ford also added, "The technology is improving all the time, extending the creative use of data to improve the presentation of English and Scottish football."

Data rights conflict

The supplier's rivals have previously argued that Football DataCo's choice to give Genius exclusive access to its data rights is anti-competitive.

2020 saw the beginning of legal action against Genius and the data rights company by the sports data and technology company Sportradar. It claimed that the cooperation violated the competition laws of the UK and the EU.

In 2022, the parties reached a compromise. Genius gave Sportradar a sublicense to access a delayed backup feed as part of an out-of-court settlement.
