Tributes Paid to Doyle Brunson, the "Godfather of Poker"
Doyle Brunson, commonly referred to as the "Godfather of Poker" for his immense influence on the game, passed away in Las Vegas on Sunday at the age of 89. His family verified the news in a statement shared by Brunson's representative on Twitter.
"It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our father, Doyle Brunson," read the statement.
."He was a beloved Christian man, husband, father and grandfather. We'll have more to say over the coming days as we honor his legacy. Please keep Doyle and our family in your prayers. May he rest in peace."
Brunson, who was inducted into the Poker Hall of Fame back in 1988, won 10 World Series of Poker tournaments, including main events in 1976 and 1977. Brunson's ten WSOP bracelets trail only Phil Hellmuth's sixteen. Brunson's influence, however, extended far beyond his success at the poker table. His publications, "Super System" and "Super System 2," are among the most influential in the history of the game. Brunson also showed his son the ropes. Todd was added to the Poker Hall of Fame in 2016.
Brunson's poker rival, Daniel Negreanu, left a touching tribute, commenting, "There will never be another Doyle Brunson", and he is not wrong!
