Record Numbers Compete in 2023 WSOP Main Event
The Main Event of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP), which will take place from Monday, July 3 through Monday, July 17, has attracted more players than ever before, surpassing 10,000 for the first time.
10,043 players are expected to compete in the Main Event alone, breaking the previous record of 8,773 participants established in 2006, when registration for the event concluded over the weekend on Sunday.
Over the years, WSOP has constantly promoted its event in an effort to increase the number of attendees who attend in person. This has eventually led to a new main table record.
Each player who enters the Main Event must pay about $10,000 to secure a spot and the opportunity to compete for the now-massive $12.1 million guaranteed prize fund for finishing first at the final table. Due to the fervent interest in the largest table the poker tournament has to offer, the overall prize pool has increased significantly.
As of right now, players have contributed a total of $100.4 million. The WSOP's own figure now stands at $7 million, with 4.9% of it coming from fees and 2.1% going to event employees. Ty Stewart, SVP and executive director of the WSOP, expressed his excitement over the record-breaking attendance:
