Sandro Tonali Starts 10-Month Ban for Illegal Betting
On Friday, Sandro Tonali, a defender for Newcastle and an international player for Italy, is thought to have started the 10-month sentence he got for illegal betting.
Formally, the ban starts the day after a statement from the FIGC is made public. Since the statement was made public on Thursday afternoon, the ban starts on Friday.
Because Tonali is suspended, he won't be able to play for Newcastle for the rest of the 2023–24 season. He also won't be able to go to Euro 2024 with Luciano Spalletti's Italy team. He will be able to play again in competitions in August 2024.
Tonali will also be on probation for a certain amount of time. If he is caught gambling illegally again, he could be banned for up to 48 months.
In addition to the €20,000 fine, Tonali will have to go to therapy to help him deal with his problem and will have to go on at least 16 public events over the next few months to warn others not to fall into the same trap he did.
